Trouble Free Computing Hello, I originally used an Apple IIGS with its GUI when using a PC meant memorising strings of gobbledegook commands, and then bought a Mac of my own. This was all 12 years ago and since then the GUI has become pretty much standard, but I always felt there was something “special” about using a Mac. I have a PC inflicted on me at work, and have often thought about conforming and having one at home, but when push comes to shove, I just can’t part with my own money to buy an inferior product that I know will cause me more trouble. Not really a ‘why I switched’ story then — more a ‘why I switched and stayed’. Thanks for a great product and many years of trouble free computing. new black and red iPod U2 Special Edition, autographed by the band. Portables iBook. Switching to Mac: Real Stories A convenient step-by-step guide to what you need to do to safely move your important files and preferences from your old PC over to your new Mac. Guide to switching Mac OS X Downloads - download the Don’t ever give in to the mediocre standards of the majority! —DH The Transition Took 30 Minutes Hello, I have been a PC (and Unix) user for about 12+ years now and just bought an 800MHz PowerBook G4. The transition to using Mac OS X and the hardware took 30 minutes max. All I had to do was learn the mantra “To achieve your goal, do the most intuitive thing”, which is completely different from the PC world. Combined with the BSD core (I am an active user and supporter of OpenBSD), this for me is the perfect operating system. I decided to get a Mac for several reasons. Friends of mine who have made the transition told me about how good OS X is, which was a big factor. Secondly, the PowerBook G4 is just the most superb piece of hardware I have seen visually and technically. Everything is so well thought out, like putting the audio jack on the side rather than the back. Cheers! — JW Surfing the Web From the Garden Apple, support through Image Capture, TWAIN support, Epson scanner drivers, CUPS Printing, PostScript transparency printing, saving custom settings when printing, personal printer sharing and updated printer drivers (including Lexmark). With built-in ability to automatically recognise your USB or FireWire camera, Mac OS X and iPhoto let you easily manage your digital images. iPhoto automatically imports all of the pictures from your camera and lets you not only organise and share them, but also enhance them with a single click and archive them to CD or DVD without leaving the application. You can even create a beautiful linen-bound book of your most treasured pictures. See a list of cameras that work with iPhoto. utilities that I use at work within Mac OS X, which is great as I am able to practise and learn more about some of the things I have been taught. I also invested in an AirPort system, which is brilliant. The other day I was surfing the Internet whilst sitting in the garden! Completely Bowled Over Last Christmas I bought my first Mac. using the Internet standard MIME types. Macs can also connect to the same networks as PCs and share files over the network using the SMB/CIFS file sharing protocol. Or you can burn a CD — Macs and PCs both read and write to the same standard for data CDs. Other options? Consider USB or FireWire removable hard disks or floppy drives, or a USB keychain flash memory device. Macs can read Windows formatted disks, making it easy to exchange Zip disks, portable hard drives or other portable media between Macs and PCs. You have multiple storage and file sharing options. Macs have been doing this for years, connecting to PC networks via modem, Ethernet and (more recently) industry-standard WiFi (we call 802.11b- and 802.11g-based wireless networking ‘AirPort’ on the Mac). The only difference is that now it’s a lot faster and easier with Mac OS X. UNIX-based and built with the networking technologies that do the heavy lifting on the Internet, Mac OS X lets you connect to PC networks and share files and printers with Windows-based PCs on those networks. Check out our Mac/PC compatibility guide. You can connect to the Internet with almost every Internet Service Provider (ISP), including Demon, the ISP of choice for UK Mac users. Mac OS X includes the Internet Connect utility, which lets you dial your ISP, establish a PPP connection over Ethernet, connect to an AirPort network or The main reason I moved over to Mac was FireWire and iMovie. Although I don’t use iMovie all that much, it is a very useful tool to have, and now I feel I am making full use of my digital video camera. I have been unable to get video capture working satisfactorily through FireWire on the last two PCs I have had. A couple of my friends have Macs, and both of them have been able to do this straight out of the box. The design of the computer helped me make my decision: the 12.1" iBook is the perfect size for people on the move. It fits in to my shoulder bag, rather than needing a laptop bag, and thus doesn’t draw any added attention to myself. Ideally for style, I would have loved a Titanium G4, but hey, wouldn’t we all! Upgrading to my Mac from my home PC wasn’t too much of a problem. Running OS X is definitely a plus when it comes to this, as you have near enough a complete system ready to go, with all the programs and utilities you need for everyday computing. However I have recently purchased Microsoft Office for Mac, which is a really good program, and fills the missing links between PC and Mac. Why do Microsoft applications on the Mac platform always seem to perform better than their PC counterparts?! Another useful Mac thing is the ability to read PC disks. Being able to copy files from my old PC on to my USB Zip drive, and for the Mac to be able to read them was particularly handy. A lot of the work I do at work involves Unix, I keep finding If you’re like most people thinking of switching from your PC to a Mac, you’ve got lots of questions.
