Meet Apple’s affordable computer for education — complete with a 17-inch flat CRT display, a PowerPC G4 processor, a SuperDrive option and a space-saving, all-in-one design that fits on school desks. Plus digital applications for learning and Mac OS X. iLife. Suddenly, it all connects. The iLife ’04 software application suite that comes on your new eMac, includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD (SuperDrive-equipped model only) and GarageBand. The apps let you and your students do fun, creative things with your pictures, music and movies — and share them with family and friends — in ways that PC users can only dream about. And whether you’re creating your own music CDs, publishing your digital pictures online, editing digital video, authoring DVDs or creating your own music, you can do all these things and more quite nicely without thumbing through a manual. It’s all part of the iLife experience. 17-inch flat CRT display. Affordable G4 processing power Educators demanded affordable G4 processing power. And now, the same awesome computing power found in the PowerBook G4 is available to educators in the eMac with a blazingly-fast 1.25GHz PowerPC G4 processor. This makes the eMac Apple’s most affordable G4-based system**. The PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine is so fast that its performance is measured in gigaflops, or billions of floating-point operations per second. The Velocity Engine uses the same 128-bit vector processing technology featured in scientific supercomputers — just what today’s students need to accelerate intensive multimedia calculations, import audio files and create video transitions in iMovie. The bottom line is that the eMac’s G4 processor makes digital media creation faster — which in turn means that students can spend more time learning and less time waiting. All-in-one design Schools have told us they really like an all-in-one design because it saves space in classrooms and computer labs. The eMac gives you all that and more, besides being easy to set up, use and maintain. There aren’t a lot of extra cords to connect monitors to computers, only one unit to keep track of (instead of having to inventory both a computer and monitor, not to mention separate speakers), and desktop clutter is kept to a minimum. The eMac is rugged like the 15-inch-CRT-based iMac, and sticky fingerprints wipe clean from the glass CRT display and from the body of the computer. Incidentally, the body is made of fire-retardant polycarbonate plastic, the same material used to manufacture bulletproof glass. So you can be sure that the eMac is strong enough for student use. Small footprint, so it fits on desks As an added bonus, the eMac design is about the same size as the 15-inch-CRT-based iMac — 8mm shorter, actually. We did this so schools can use the same tables and desks that are already in classrooms. It’s got the drive you need The eMac now comes with your choice of a SuperDrive, a Combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, a CD-ROM drive or a new no-optical-drive option. Students can store classroom projects on data CDs, and teachers can store multiple class projects on a DVD-R disk. Note that recordable CDs cost less than 50p each, and can hold 650MB of information — the equivalent of more than 450 floppy disks — making them the smart solution for saving digital media projects, or sharing them with others. DVDs — the kind you can burn on your new SuperDrive-equipped eMac — can store a mind-boggling Take advantage of Apple’s educational discounts at the Apple Store for Education. Apple and Education When it comes to education, Apple understands time spent learning how to use a computer isn’t necessarily time well spent. Using a computer isn’t an end in itself. It’s a means to an end — in this case, an enriched learning experience that contributes to student achievement. Apple believes that harnessing the power of a computer should come as naturally and intuitively as using a pencil or paintbrush. And Macintosh makes this possible. It’s been more than 25 years since Apple computers first appeared in classrooms, marking the beginning of our commitment to education. Then in 1984 Apple introduced the Macintosh, a personal computer that not only made students more productive, it was enormously rewarding to use. Now the eMac is here to revolutionise the way teachers teach and students learn — not least because it features so many things you’ve specifically asked for. Better way to manage inventory By the way, the eMac even gives you a better way to manage your -40° to 116° F (-40° to 47° C) Relative humidity: 5% to 95% non-condensing Maximum altitude: 10,000 feet Size and weight Height: 40.6 cm (15.8 inches) Width: 40.6 cm (15.8 inches) Rendering multiple transitions in iMovie. Scrolling through 10,000 images in iPhoto. Importing CDs into iTunes in record time. Adding multiple software instruments to a GarageBand composition. Encoding massive projects to DVD in next to no time. What do all of these iLife tasks have in common? They all require lots of processing power, and the eMac delivers, handling these taxing responsibilities effortlessly. For that, you have the PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine to thank. It delivers exceptional processing power, making processor-intensive tasks as routine as surfing the Web or retrieving email. PowerPC G4 and Mac OS X Panther You’ll love the way the PowerPC G4 processor works with Mac OS X to give you a one-two performance punch. Mac OS X features pre-emptive multitasking, which allocates processor cycles on an as-needed basis; and protected memory, which keeps you up and running even if an application happens to crash. Quartz Extreme takes full advantage of the graphics chip in your eMac to make everything on-screen move faster, freeing up processor cycles for the PowerPC G4 chip at 60Hz, 67Hz, 72Hz, 75Hz, 85Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz and 120Hz 800-by-600 pixels at 56Hz, 60Hz, 72Hz, 75Hz, 85Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz and 120Hz 1024-by-768 pixels at 60Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz, 85Hz, 90Hz and 100Hz 1152-by-870 pixels at 75Hz 1280-by-960 pixels at 75Hz S-video and composite video output to connect directly to a TV or projector (requires Apple Video Adaptor, sold separately) Support for video mirroring: external devices display an image identical to that shown on the built-in display Graphics support ATI Radeon 9200 graphics processor with AGP 4X support 32MB of dedicated Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM video memory Five screen resolutions: 640-by-480 pixels, 800-by-600 pixels, 1024-by-768 pixels, 1152-by-864 pixels and 1280-by-960 pixels Peripheral connections Two FireWire 400 ports; 8 watts shared Total of five USB ports: three USB 2.0 ports on computer (up to 480Mbps); two USB 1.1 ports on keyboard Audio Integrated high-performance stereo audio system Internal 16-watt digital amplifier Headphone jack (headphones not included) Audio line-in jack Built-in microphone Electrical and environmental requirements Meets ENERGY STAR requirement Line voltage: configured for 100-120V AC or 200-240V AC depending on country of use Frequency: 50Hz to 60Hz, single phase Maximum continuous power: 230W Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C) Storage temperature: That would be the SuperDrive-equipped eMac, the all-in-one Apple system that’s as easy to use as it’s tightly integrated. Play it Again, Sam We call the optical drive in our top-of-the-line eMac a SuperDrive because it allows you to do so much. Quickly install applications from CD-ROM discs. Watch the latest Hollywood films on DVD and see how great the special effects look on eMac’s flat and brilliant display. Play music CDs. And import your favourite songs and albums into iTunes, where you can organise them into playlists to suit every mood and occasion. Create Your Own DVDs With a SuperDrive-equipped eMac, you can also author your own DVDs. Every eMac comes with iDVD. One of the members of the stellar suite of iLife applications, iDVD provides a simple one-window interface for assembling a DVD that holds up to two hours of movies and thousands of digital images. You can create menus with up to six navigation buttons over full-motion backgrounds. iDVD comes with an array of professionally designed themes and also lets you create your own. The MPEG-2 encoder in iDVD and the Mac OS X architecture combine to provide fast encoding and accelerated DVD recording. And once you burn your projects to a DVD, you can pop them in the post and send them to friends and family. That’s because the DVDs the SuperDrive creates can be played on most consumer DVD players. Options to Burn The fact is, the industry-standard SuperDrive gives you plenty of options when it comes to burning optical discs. Let’s start with the most common activity: burning an audio CD. iTunes makes it point-and-click simple to burn your favourite playlists onto ubiquitous write-once CD-R discs. In fact, you can easily burn either standard music or MP3 discs in iTunes using the SuperDrive. Those same CD-R discs also offer a great option for archiving data. Costing less than 50 pence each and available on spindles of 100 or more, each CD-R can hold up to 700MB of data, offering a very economical way to archive and safeguard important documents. The SuperDrive also writes to slightly more expensive CD-RW media, discs that can be erased and then written to again. They offer the same capacity as CD-R discs, but because they can be written to multiple times, they’re a great option for sharing large files or projects with others. And when it comes to archiving, iTunes and Mac OS X can burn DVD-R optical discs, as well. Think CDs hold a lot of data? DVDs can store up to 4.7GB on each disc, enough to easily back up your entire digital photo collection or thousands of music files. That’s the equivalent of seven CDs, 18 Zip 250 disks or 3,200 floppies. Remember them? Burn DVDs fast An industry-standard drive, the SuperDrive reads many standard CD and DVD formats and writes (or burns) CDs and DVDs lightning fast, writing CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed and DVD-R discs at up to 8x speed. When you’re sorting images in iPhoto, fine tuning a particularly complicated passage in GarageBand, grappling with sales projections in an AppleWorks spreadsheet or heading down a handrail with Tony Hawk, it helps to gaze into a big, beautiful screen. Flat’s Where It’s At 4.7GB of data (the equivalent of 3200 floppy discs or 7 CD-R discs). DVD playback allows students to view multimedia content on DVD. The no-optical-drive option prevents students from introducing viruses, playing music CDs, or pirating software and digital music. Two computers in one. The eMac comes with Mac OS X, Apple’s powerful yet easy-to-use operating system. The first operating system designed for the 21st century, UNIX-based Mac OS X works with most of your existing network and peripherals, and fits perfectly into education environments. Today thousands of applications take full advantage of Mac OS X’s power and versatility, including the critically-acclaimed Microsoft Office for Mac OS X. And because Mac OS X runs Mac OS 9 applications in Classic mode, you can continue to use your older software. Fastest way to the Internet See how fast the Mac gets students on the Internet. It’s so easy to set up and use, you’ll be online and researching on the Web in 10 minutes or less using the 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port for broadband, or an optional AirPort Extreme* Card for working with the Web wirelessly. The Internet Setup Assistant appears the first time your eMac is turned on, and automatically configures your system for your Internet service provider (ISP). All you need is an ethernet connection — the eMac comes complete with everything else. Like the brilliant 17-inch (16-inch viewable) flat CRT display you’ll find on eMac? It’s a real stunner, and you’ll be able to work on eMac longer without your eyes getting tired. That’s because there’s less glare: the flat CRT produces less image distortion than curved CRTs. And since it offers nearly 40% more viewing area than a 15-inch CRT, the display provides plenty of space for large images, several Web pages or numerous documents. In fact, eMac lets you tailor its screen real estate to fit your needs, offering five crystal-clear resolutions that you can change on the fly — from 640-by-480 to 1280-by-960. Why is it helpful to have multiple resolutions? Let’s say you have a really complex project for which you’re tracking progress and expenses in AppleWorks. Since you want to see as many rows and columns as possible on your spreadsheet, you change resolution to 1280-by-960 and, voila, And for next-generation audio and video streaming features, Mac OS X includes QuickTime 6, the premier technology for digital media. The OpenGL Advantage Mac OS X features robust support for OpenGL, the industry-standard 3D technology for professional-quality rendering, texture-mapping and photorealistic special effects. Display for play The eMac provides five screen resolutions: 640-by-480 pixels at 138Hz, 800-by-600 pixels at 112Hz, 1024-by-768 pixels at 89Hz, 1152-by-864 pixels at 80Hz, and 1280-by-960 pixels at 72Hz. And it offers nearly 40% more viewing area than a 15-inch CRT. So you’ll have more space to work and play. Getting email. Doing research. Creating budgets. Editing video. Chatting. Building and organising your digital music collection. Constructing a database. Writing term papers. Sorting images for a slide show. Right out of the box, eMac provides you with the software you need to do all of the above. And more. Much more. World’s Most Advanced Operating System It all starts with Mac OS X version 10.3, “Panther”. Secure, reliable and responsive, Mac OS X offers a wealth of innovative features and a rock-solid UNIX underpinning. The ultimate platform for the digital lifestyle, it works with today’s most popular FireWire and USB peripheral devices, and it’s programmed to get every last bit of performance out of your software. In addition, the Mac OS X Classic environment allows you to run Mac OS 9 software. Go on Safari The eMac ships with Safari, the fastest browser on the Mac and the best browser on any platform. Safari uses the advanced interface technologies underlying Mac OS X to offer you whole new ways to experience the Internet. Follow the Thread Mac OS X Mail gives you email that goes beyond words. You can drag and drop pictures, sounds and movies into your email, and use colours, fonts and formatting commands to enhance the look of your message. Mac OS X Mail also features sophisticated built-in junk mail filtering to identify and remove junk mail messages. Its simple controls let you train it to recognise what you consider spam. Mail even lets you track multiple email threads — that is, mail with the same subject line — making it easier to see who said what and when. Video Conferencing for All Instant messaging is all the rage, and you’ll be happy to know that your eMac comes with iChat AV, software that lets you chat with buddies on both .Mac and AOL. But iChat AV lets you do so much more. Add an optional iSight video camera and you can chat with people thousands of miles away in a full-screen personal video conference over any broadband connection. In fact, with iChat AV 2.1, you can even video conference with friends using the new AOL Instant Messenger 5.5 for Windows, giving you immediate access to millions of people in both the Mac and PC communities. Plan your Schedule iCal features at-a-glance views of upcoming activities by day, week or month, and lets you track your appointments and events with multiple calendars. World Book features thousands of QuickTime movies, sound clips, digital images and over 20,000 fact-packed articles. And if you’re interested in finding out how the world got along before the eMac came along, use World Book’s Time Frame feature to locate information about everything from Aegean cultures and the Age of Reason to the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution. AppleWorks 6 With its Pump up the Volume The eMac has a thunderous stereo system with 16 watts of resonant, digitally amplified sound. Compare that to the tinny “sound systems” typically found on PCs. And when you pop your favourite music CD or DVD into your Combo drive or SuperDrive and turn up the volume, you’ll hear the difference. The audio line in jack connects external audio sources such as a microphone or tape recorder so you can import your own recordings. And the headphone jack will come in handy if your neighbours ask you to keep it down. Sold separately Simple as 1-2-3 Apple understands. You want to spend your time creating things, not figuring out how to make your tools work. That’s why disc burning is built right into Mac OS X. The display offers nearly 40% more viewing area than a 15-inch CRT, so you’ll have almost 40% more work space — perfect for viewing large images, and multiple Web pages and documents. Since the screen is flat (with less image distortion than curved CRTs), there’s less glare, making it easier on the eyes. The eMac comes with five crisp screen resolutions — 640-by-480 pixels at 138Hz, 800-by-600 pixels at 112Hz, 1024-by-768 pixels at 89Hz, 1152-by-864 pixels at 80Hz, and 1280-by-960 pixels at 72Hz — making it perfect for the classroom. Setting the screen to a higher resolution means there is more workspace for students and teachers to study large documents, two-page spreads, Web sites and other projects without having to waste time scrolling down to see the rest of the document. Less scrolling means more time spent working and learning — a desirable outcome in an environment where every second counts. Mac OS X takes over from there, automatically burning the disc before ejecting it. Editing in iMovie just got easier — and faster. Why not select the best parts of your video footage and put them together to create an engaging movie? With the eMac’s speed, you can test the numerous titles, transitions and effects with little effort and in no time. If you’re using iDVD to author a DVD disc on your SuperDrive-equipped eMac, you’re doing something that not long ago cost thousands of pounds for specialised hardware (1). The PowerPC G4 processor and SuperDrive that come in the eMac let you perform that same task for a fraction of the price. You can do it faster, too: the MPEG-2 encoder in iDVD and the Mac OS X architecture combine to provide fast encoding and accelerated DVD dozens of columns and rows leap into view. Less scrolling saves time, after all. Blistering 3D Effects To power this brilliant CRT, we’ve included an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics processor with 32MB of dedicated Double Data Rate (DDR) video memory. The Radeon processor offers dazzling 2D, 3D and video performance, a feature you’ll really appreciate when editing footage in iMovie or while playing the recently-released Unreal Tournament. The fact that eMac even has a dedicated graphics processor sets it apart from many computers in its price range. Many other computers that are as affordable as eMac come with “integrated Intel graphics”. That means that to draw graphics on the screen, they steal power from the main processor, siphoning off memory from system-level RAM. Think that doesn’t have an effect? If a PC with integrated graphics has 256MB of RAM, it needs to divert a big chunk of that memory to draw complex 3D images or pump ever-changing video to the screen, leaving whatever memory remains to keep up with all of your other computing demands. Fast Memory The ATI Radeon 9200 processor packs its own memory punch — 32MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) memory to be exact. The result: it pumps out millions of triangles per second (the standard way to describe graphics performance), ensuring compatibility with the latest generation of graphics-intensive 3D games. As its name implies, DDR memory transfers data to video memory at twice the speed of SDRAM, enabling the eMac to process twice the graphics information per clock cycle, resulting in sizzling frame rates. Not only does the Radeon 9200 processor give you fluid 3D graphics, but it boosts eMac performance significantly, as well. How? By handling all graphic-intensive operations, it allows the PowerPC G4 processor to complete its own tasks unimpeded. So you get even more power at your fingertips. See for Yourself You’ll see what we mean when you play Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, the fast-paced role-playing game that ships with the eMac. Playing the role of Tony Hawk and other top-notch skateboarders, you’ll skate through enormous free roaming levels, choose from 190 progressively harder goals and build your skills to perform some of the greatest stunts of all time. It’s a great way to see the eMac’s 3D graphics capability in action. You can also experience the eMac edge by taking a trip to the city. SimCity, that is (1). The 4th-generation incarnation of one of the most absorbing games for the Macintosh platform, SimCity 4 lets you construct the most realistic metropolis imaginable, complete with municipalities that — once you’ve connected them with transportation hubs and networks — share and compete for resources. You can lay out the groundwork for your cities by shaping mountains and valleys, planting forests and creating rivers, and tracking the lives of individual Sims as they go about their daily routines. Video out Support Want to share the action with others on an external VGA display, projector or TV? That’s easy. The eMac features a mini VGA output jack that works with an optional Apple VGA Display Adaptor and supports video mirroring. You can mirror your projects to an external display or projector, offering you a perfect way to give presentations in a classroom lab. Additionally, the eMac comes with support for S-video and composite video signals, so you can display your multimedia projects on a big-screen TV: simply connect your TV to the video output jack via the optional Apple Video Adaptor, and you’re on television. Mac OS X Graphics Three cutting-edge technologies in Mac OS X — Quartz Extreme, OpenGL and QuickTime — combine to push the graphics envelope beyond previous limits. The Apple-engineered Quartz 2D graphics engine with built-in PDF support features on-the-fly rendering, anti-aliasing and compositing of PDF for pristine, high-fidelity graphics. OpenGL provides industry-standard 3D graphics capabilities for professional 3D-based applications and the most demanding games. recording. Your Own Recording Studio Taking full advantage of the processing power of the eMac, GarageBand, the newest member of the iLife family, turns your eMac into an anytime, anywhere recording studio packed with hundreds of virtual instruments. It’s the easiest way to create, perform and record your own music. And you can add your original music to your slideshows, your DVD menus, burn it to CDs or score your iMovie projects. Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort. Range may vary with site conditions. Achieving data rates up to 54Mbps requires that all users have an AirPort Extreme Card and connect to an AirPort Extreme Base Station. Wireless printing over USB requires Mac OS X v10.2.7 or later and a compatible printer. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less. Requires adaptor, sold separately.
